India Planning Its Own Computer Operating System

10 Oct, 2010

Defense Research and Development Organization (DROD) of India is putting a dedicated team of 50 software professionals in the Bangalore and Delhi software development centers to develop an operating system (OS) of its own.

Dr V K Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defense Minister of India told India times that he just set up a software center in Delhi for that task. The effort will be headed by DROD in partnership with software companies and academic institutions.

Saraswat, told India times that the efforts to build India own operating system is based on security needs to thwart attempts of cyber attacks and data theft, rather than relying on western Operating systems “Only way to protect it is to have a home-grown system, the complete architecture…source code is with you and then nobody knows what’s that.”

DRDO is also planning a commercial arm for the OS, the OS is expected to be operational next year.
