BREAKING: Twitter SMS Back In The Arab World: Now in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

17 Jun, 2010

Updated: below.

In August 2008 Twitter shut down SMS for the most of the world to save the hefty SMS cost, we  exclusively   reported back August 2009 back that Twitter is in talks with one of the largest mobile operators in the Arab world Zain to enable 2 way SMS in the Arab countries it has operations in.

Now that post seems to news have become true as now Twitter mobile page shows SMS option avalibe to Jordan only with Zain, Kuwait with Zain only and Saudi Arabia with STC only.

I have not tested Twitter SMS in Jordan yet since I do not have a Zain number but if you live in one of these 3 countries  and have Zain or STS  STC numbers do please let us know via comment if it works.

Zain Jordan has also another SMS deal with Jordanian Startup WatWet Twitter’s Arabic clone. This news for sure is not good news for Watwet, as the only advantage watwet had over Twitter is its SMS service and now Twitter has it!

We are big fans of Twitter in ArabCrunch since day 1 of its launch and happy to see this good news.

It has been there for a while now, but dummy .. i tried to add my zain jordan number a week ago, and today as well, for no good, deducted the message cost, but never got activated .. even though i receive a message ever since then from the same number (twitter) stating that my phone is still isn’t verified.. But that would be a wonderful feature if activated and setup correctly!!

did you follow these instructions from Twitter mobile page?

Receive texts for DMs and the tweets from users you want to be notified about.

Clicking the phone icon on a users profile page or your followers page sets Tweet notifications for that user.

i know its features, but they are all useless unless you activate (verify) your phone which is technically not working (at least for me) ..

Hi, I tried the activation steps yesterday twice with no use, but I received today morning an SMS, and with following few SMS instructions, my phone is now activated. I have tried it and it works fine with my ZAIN no. @husseinhilmi
