Yahoo Maktoob to Close Zinza in 9 Days

18 May, 2010

We reported last month that Yahoo is shutting down around 27 sites, since then the NASDAQ listed company has been doing a number of cleanups and introducing further integration between Maktoob sites and Yahoo services and Yahoo’s corporate look and feel.

The 27 sites  that Yahoo Maktoob will shutdown were all in Arabic, but today while hitting Zinza I also found out that this site will be closing in 9 days.

Zinza was launched by Maktoob before the acquisition sometimes last year as far as I remember, it some how works as a news aggregator like google news for the region, but with some more interesting features, such as filtering news into companies, people, sectors and places. It highlights how many times a person or a company has been mentioned in the news across the web.

The site now seems to be out of order as we see many old stories, some old as last year.

We will contact Yahoo Middle East to know which other sites they will also  close.

Still think the acquisition of Maktoob by Yahoo was good for the region?

yes it started a fire ball, the founders of Yahoo are investing in other startups such as TwitVid , investors now see the exit window open, and now we are seeing more Venture capital funds and accelerators popping up in the region.

Only fools get too attached to their mistakes. Failed products and failed people should eventually be phased out.

Yahoo! is a company that’s currently sort of on the loose. Their losing on several grounds and their doing their best to stay relevant by making bold moves, launching and closing services, acquiring companies and moving away from their search services.

The acquisition of Maktoob by Yahoo! might instead of a positive spiral turn into a negative spiral because the 100+ Million Maktoob users are seeing services and forums they use daily get shut down and their news portal has now been turned into a traffic funnel for Yahoo!

When you visit you get redirected to a sort of Yahoo! search/news landing page. The strategy of Yahoo! is obvious. Gain 100+ Million users of the Yahoo! sites by acquiring Maktoob but if they don’t watch out and continue degrading the original Maktoob concept they will lose the loyal users of Maktoob by changing the concept too drastically.
