Interview With Frederik, CEO of WorldWideWorker: Dice Looking for More Acquisitions in the Region.

Following the news of Dice  holdings -which owns the well known tech jobs websites Dice- acquisition of Dubai based, Wordlwideworker for 6 million USD, we made a followup Interview with Worldwideworker CEO Frederik Rengers, to tell us more about his company and the acquisition. Thanks Fredreik for your time and I hope it will be a benefit for you our readers.

AC: When did you start worldwideworker.? who are the founders and their nationalities?

Frederik Rengers: “ was founded in 2000 by Jan Scholten, a dutch Petroleum Engineer who had a successful career in the oil industry working with Schlumberger. Betterbe, a successful internet IT company, was also a founding partner. I invested and joined Worldwideworker at the end of 2001 and became the CEO in 2007. I’m dutch and my previous work experience was as a petroleum engineer. Finally, Florence Card is the current Director of She joined the company in 2001 and is from Brunei.

AC: Did you bootstrap or received funding ? if you got funded please provide names of funders and amount/s

Frederik Rengers: The company was founded with private equity money and with friends and family investments.

AC: How did you grow worldwideworker. CVs? what marketing techniques did you use?

Frederik Rengers: From the beginning, always had top-notch energy and oil and gas jobs which is premier content for energy professionals. These high-quality positions attracted a significant energy industry community and their CVs. It helps that we never strayed from our targeted, specialized focus on the best jobs available in the energy industry. In addition, from the beginning, we boosted our community through links and tie-ups with industry leaders, and later we began to use Google adword campaigns.

AC: How much revenues/per month last 2 years did you achieve before the acquisition? and source of revenues (business model)

Frederik Rengers:’s revenue model is to sell Jobpostings, CV Search accounts, Candidate attraction Media products and Recruitment Events to Clients who are looking for the best international professionals in the Oil and Gas industry. Both the very high focus on the Oil and Gas industry as the pool over over 430,000 International candidates makes the company very strong in getting the best Oil and Gas talent hired by our Clients.

AC: This is to the founders if they are not you: how did you came up with the idea? what is the story?

Frederik Rengers: It had started to become apparent in 2000 that the average age of oil and gas professionals in the western world was unhealthily high. So, looking at retirement trends and skillpool demographics, it was easy to understand that a shortage of experienced personnel was looming. This is what the founder Jan Scholten saw happening and is why he started the company.
Looking back to 2001, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE – the very successful and international professional association) had already organized a large symposium called ‘The Big Crew Change’ which addressed the personnel shortage issue. Out of this need, the idea came to create an international market place for oil and gas talent to find jobs. So whereas did not create new engineers, it did provide a platform so that the current skillpool could be utilized more efficiently. Furthermore in a highly-specialized, but international marketplace — it is simply not practical to advertise energy jobs in many different local channels — so the creation of an international online job board made a lot of sense.

AC: Why do you think Dice acquired you? who approached who?

Frederik Rengers: Dice is by far the leader in online specialty recruiting and wants to grow both into new industries and internationally. fit both criteria and we were excited to join the Dice team. There is no doubt, Dice will bring more resources and a wealth of expertise that we can tap to make Worldwideworker even stronger.

AC: Are you going to stay as CEO and for how long? what about the founders?

Frederik Rengers: Yes. I will be staying on as CEO. Dice has purchased a number of businesses over the years and each founder or leader of those businesses is still with Dice today.

AC: Any plans for the founder/s to invest in other startups in the region?

Frederik Rengers: There are no immediate plans, but there are certainly a number of very successful and interesting technology companies being created in the Gulf region.

AC: Does Dice has plans to acquire more job sites in the region?

Frederik Rengers: Michael Durney, SVP of Finance and CFO of Dice Holdings, Inc. said, “We are always looking for acquisitions including in the region. Specifically, we like online communities where specialized recruiting offers a real advantage.”

AC: What is next for worldwideworker?

Frederik Rengers: With the support of the Dice Holdings group, the next steps for will be to further strengthen their position as leading job board for the international oil and gas community and to invest in new technology and infrastructure to grow the business.
