BREAKING: While Still Under DDoS Attack, ArabCrunch.com is Back to Serve the Community, Thanks to Spirula Systems
We have a noble mission at ArabCrunch which is to help enable a technology revoluation in the Arab, Muslim and emerging world. But it seems some people do not like us to the level that made them launch a brutal DDoS attack since last thursday night on this blog, forcing us to shut down for around 4 days.
DDoS attacks are attempts to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users by flooding it with fake requests making website unavailable to legitimate traffic. DDoS attacks are one of the most dangers online attacks as they shut down mega sites such as Twitter and made facebook unstable.
The type of DDoS attacked us, was using geographically distributed bots on infected Microsoft Windows computers that try to hit our homepage with as much simultaneous requests as they can, these infected computers computers by viruses or worms that are controlled by one unknown master, who can’t be traceable due to the type of attackers.
The attacks costed ArabCrunch some losses, we lost visits for 4 days, diverted our resources from producing usefull and innovative great apps on arabcrunch.net to help empower the startup and tech community, cost us money and made us along with a number of friends stay awake with little sleep for a number of days.
Friends and fans of ArabCrunch rushed to help starting with Mahoumd Mehyer from Feedoor, a ninja system admin who decided not to disclose his name spent the whole night at my house trying to block the attackers and our friends at Alexandria Egypt based startup Spirula Systems lead by the security expert Ahmed Mekkawy. ( Who wrote last year on ArabCrunch a great post in how he managed to defend against DDoS attacks.)
However until Saturday night all efforts where useless so Ahmed suggested we move to a server from our current VPS so we better manage to deal with the attacks. And Yes , thanks first to God Almighty then to Spirula systems who managed to deal with the attacks and make our site available along with a help from our senior engineer Zakwan Hajjar, Mahmood Mehyar and Humam Alhawasly from Syria: Since around 2 hours ago ArabCrunch.com back even though we are still while under attack but a live and here to serve you continuing our mission to empower Arab startups and tech innovators towards the ultimate goal.
Again I would like to thank Spirtual systems for their great lead efforts as they are the one who actually managed to block the attack, Mahmood Mehyar and feedoor, The undercover Ninja, Zakwan, and everyone who helped in one way or another via advice or via expressing their concern starting from Geeks from Egypt, Syria, UAE, Jordan and USA.
ArabCrunch.com is still under attack so hang on there if we face any difficulties the attacker might be using new methods to readopt with Ahmed’s defense techniques, but by the well of God we will stay here to serve you.
Update: I forgot to say that at the same time the attack was launched on ArabCrunch, our friends at SalamBC the muslim business social network, were also under attack.
