Youconvertit Convert Anything to Anything!

4 May, 2009

YouConvertIt is a web service that lets you convert almost anything digital to any other formats for free without the need to install additional software.  With YouConvertIt you can covert audio, photos, videos and Archive files, and even unites to wide array of other formats. Additionally you can use it to send files, and download and convert online videos from sites such as youtube, Metacafe and Vimeo.

The website has a dead simple interface that uses AJAX, making the service fast and easy to use. Currently the service supports up to 5 files for conversion and sending. And the conversion limit is up 300 MB size while file sending limit is up to 1 GB.  This makes youconvertit convenient for light file conversions use. However the service is an indication into how the Internet based apps are replacing traditional PC based software.

As mentioned at the begging of the post youconvertIt supports a wide array of files formats, below is a list of the most widely used (at least by me):

Audio such as : AAC, MP3 and  WAV,

Images such as: BMP, GIF, JPG- JPEG , PNG and TIFF.

Video Formats such as: 3GP, ASF,  AVI, FLV, MOV, MP4, MPEG, MPG, RM, SWF and WMV.

Archive such as:  zip and RAR.

(Full list of supported format here)

How does it work ?

1. Enter an email address where you want to receive the converted file.

2. Browse and select file you want to convert.

3. Choose the output file format and click convert.

4. Get an email with converted file.

YouConvert which is still in beta was launched in late 2007 and developed using .NET . It is cofounded by Alaa Majthoub from Jordan acting as CEO, his cousin Monti Majthoub and Bassel Nemmer a .NET developer.

Alaa told me that the websites attracts 5000 visits per day, around 150,000 visits per month. The startup is self funded with total investment of about 150,000 $ USD , it has offices in San Francisco, CA, USA and Amman, Jordan. Alaa also told me that they are open to Venture Capital (VC) and angel investors.

To date the startup did not monetize much from its website, however Alaa told me they will launch in about a month a premium service, he did not disclose more info, however I suspect that support for higher conversion size will be included in the premium service. I also suggested to him to add an AIR application for the service, in order to make it easier to convert files.

Youconvertit competes with Zamzar and Media-Convert. Nevertheless it was rated as “simply the best file conversion service”  by because it is faster,  supports more file formats and coverts  higher sizes of files up to 300 MB.
